Common Summer Foot Injuries

Foot Injury Treatment Gold Coast

Summer is one of the most active times of the year. Between beach days, holidays, long walks and outdoor adventures, our feet often work harder than usual. With the warmer weather also comes a rise in common foot injuries that can interrupt plans and slow you down.

Here are some of the most frequent issues we see during the summer months, and how you can help prevent them.

Blisters

Heat, sweat and friction are the perfect combination for blisters. New sandals and thongs often rub against the skin, especially when worn for long stretches.

How to prevent them:

  • Break in new shoes gradually
  • Keep feet dry with moisture wicking socks
  • Choose sandals with soft, supportive straps

Sprained Ankles

Uneven ground at the beach, wet surfaces and outdoor play can increase the risk of rolling an ankle. Soft sand and rocky areas also challenge balance more than people expect.

How to prevent them:

  • Take care on unstable or slippery surfaces
  • Wear supportive footwear for long walks
  • Strengthen ankles with simple balance exercises

Cracked Heels

Dry air, open backed shoes and long days on your feet can cause the skin on the heels to dry out and crack. This can become painful if the skin splits.

How to prevent them:

  • Moisturise your feet regularly
  • Avoid standing barefoot on hot surfaces
  • Wear cushioned, supportive shoes when possible

Plantar Fasciitis Flare Ups

Going from minimal activity to long summer walks can place extra strain on the plantar fascia. Flat thongs and worn out sandals can make this worse.

How to prevent it:

  • Wear shoes with arch support for long days
  • Stretch your calves before and after activity
  • Build up walking distance gradually after periods of rest

Cuts and Scrapes

Shells, rocks, sticks and hot pavement can easily cut or bruise the feet. Public pools and change rooms can also increase exposure to infections if skin breaks.

How to prevent them:

  • Be mindful when walking barefoot outdoors
  • Rinse and protect small cuts quickly
  • Wear water shoes around rocky areas if needed

When to Seek Guidance
