If you’ve ever winced when stepping out of bed in the morning or felt a sharp ache in your heel after a long day on your feet — you’re not alone. Heel pain is one of the most common reasons people seek podiatry care, and it can affect anyone, from tradies to runners to those on their feet all day.
At The Foot Stop, we help people across the Gold Coast and Northern NSW get to the bottom of their foot pain and walk comfortably again.
What Causes Heel Pain?
There are several possible causes of heel pain, but the most common is plantar fasciitis — inflammation of the band of tissue (plantar fascia) that runs under your foot from heel to toes.
Other causes might include:
- Heel spurs – bony growths on the heel bone
- Achilles tendinopathy – inflammation of the Achilles tendon
- Bursitis – inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion your heel
- Poor footwear – flat, unsupportive shoes that cause stress on the heel
- Sudden increases in activity or standing for long periods
Common Signs of Heel Pain
- Sharp pain in the heel when getting up in the morning
- Soreness after long periods of standing or walking
- Pain that improves with movement but returns later
- A bruised feeling in the heel or arch area
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting it checked before it worsens or becomes chronic.
What You Can Do
Here are a few ways to ease heel pain and prevent it from returning:
Wear Supportive Footwear
Avoid flat shoes, thongs, or worn-out runners. Look for shoes with firm arch support, cushioning, and a secure fit.
Stretch Your Feet and Calves
Gentle stretches help relieve tension in the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon. A podiatrist can show you the best exercises for your feet.
Use Orthotics
Custom orthotics can help offload pressure from the heel and improve foot function. They’re especially helpful if you have flat feet or a biomechanical imbalance.
See a Podiatrist
The sooner you get on top of it, the easier it is to treat. We’ll assess your walking pattern, footwear, and foot structure to tailor a plan that works for you.
